Background of the Study
Pediatric emergencies require prompt and specialized care to prevent adverse outcomes in children. Emergency nurses are often the first healthcare providers to assess and manage these critical situations. Their roles encompass rapid assessment, stabilization, and initiation of treatment protocols tailored to pediatric patients. In Benue State, Nigeria, understanding the specific contributions and challenges faced by emergency nurses in managing pediatric emergencies is vital for improving child health services.
Statement of the Problem
Managing pediatric emergencies presents unique challenges, including the need for specialized knowledge, skills, and equipment. In Benue State, factors such as limited access to pediatric-specific training for nurses, inadequate resources, and high patient volumes may hinder effective management of pediatric emergencies. There is a need to evaluate the current role of emergency nurses in this context to identify areas for improvement.
Objectives of the Study
1. To delineate the specific roles and responsibilities of emergency nurses in managing pediatric emergencies in Benue State.
2. To assess the level of training and preparedness of emergency nurses for pediatric emergency care.
3. To identify challenges faced by emergency nurses in the management of pediatric emergencies and propose solutions.
Research Questions
1. What roles do emergency nurses play in the management of pediatric emergencies in Benue State?
2. How prepared are emergency nurses in terms of training and resources to handle pediatric emergencies?
3. What challenges do emergency nurses encounter in managing pediatric emergencies, and what strategies can address these challenges?
Research Hypotheses
1. Emergency nurses in Benue State have clearly defined roles in pediatric emergency management.
2. There is a significant association between the level of specialized training in pediatric care and the effectiveness of emergency nurses in managing pediatric emergencies.
3. Identifying and addressing specific challenges can enhance the capacity of emergency nurses to manage pediatric emergencies effectively.
Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on emergency departments in selected healthcare facilities across Benue State. It will involve assessing the roles, training, and challenges of emergency nurses in managing pediatric emergencies. Limitations may include variability in hospital settings and potential response biases from participants.
